May 31

Just wanted to say a quick well done to the Cork Hurling team who got their championship season off to a great start at the weekend by beating Tipperary. It’s only May 31st so still along way to go in the season but I know the analysis work that has been done today using Dartfish and its great to see some reward at the end of it.

Well done Cork and Keep it up.

Dartfish - Usain Bolt

Jul 30

I got the following email from a colleague in the UK today. I just wanted to share it with everybody.

“I received a call a few weeks ago from an Track and field agent. He said one of his athletes had specifically requested the use of Dartfish and would like to meet.

A few days later I demonstrated Dartfish to the coaches/athletes and management team.  I showed two runners in the analyser and concentrated on the side by side/blend and reversing one picture to synch up their direction of travel.

They are now the proud users of 3 Team Pro’s

The athlete in question:

Mr Usain Bolt. Olympic Champion and World Record Holder for the 100m and 200m.

It is marvellous to see an athlete who has ran 9.69sec for the 100m and 19.30 for the 200m still believes he can improve.  Complacency is the downfall of any champion and it is a scary thought for others who do not see the benefit of analysing their technique leading up to the 2012 Olympics.

This man will go faster with the help of Dartfish.”

If you need help getting more out of your Dartfish system or want to get started with Dartfish, drop me an email. robert.carroll@tocasports.com

Performance Analysis Sport

Jul 21

Came across this video today on YouTube. It’s from the Canadian Sports Centre where they train their high performance athletes. Some interesting use of the Performance Analysis Technology (including Dartfish). I really liked the look of the eye movement camera. Must google that later.

Anyway - here’s the video hope you enjoy.

Dartfsh Perfromance Analysis

Jun 15

There were some great performances by the Dartfish family at the weekend. Especially of note was Cork’s win against Kerry in the Munster Semi-Final Replay. I know Conor Counihan and Performance Analyst John Murphy will have been hard at work over the last few months preparing for the game. And with such a comprehensive win it looks like it has paid off. Still along way to go to All-Ireland success but congrats to Performance Analyst John Murphy.

Dartfish Video Analysis

Jun 10

IMG Academies have just decided on Dartfish as their tool of choice in their various academies. Dartfish Video Analysis is being implemented into The Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy, the IMG Soccer Academy, the IMG Baseball Academy, the IMG Basketball Academy, the IMG Swimming Academy and the IMG Performance Institute.

These academies are some of the highest profile academies in world sport and it is great to see they have chosen Dartfish.

The Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy “War Room”

Thirty-one of our courts are equipped with state-of-the-art video cameras to capture match play. All content from the cameras are fed into the “War Room” where our coaches can analyze our student’s on-court performance. Coaches then work one-on-one with students to help them reach the apex of their game, with video assisting in the communication process.

Match Analysis

In addition to Dartfish, the IMG Soccer Academy will also use Match Analysis to dig deeper into the strategy of the game. Match Analysis indexes and categorizes every touch by every player during a match and provides coaches with cutting-edge tools for analysis, player development, scouting and video archiving.

Derry v Monaghan Ulster Championship

May 25

Well Derry and Monaghan really went at it on Sunday. Only saw highlights of the game last night on the Sunday game but the analysts weren’t happy. Unfortunately in this battle of 2 Dartfishers there could only be one winner. Johnny Bradley of SINI is the Performance Analyst with Monaghan and Brendan McRory with Derry.

I’m sure both analysts were hard at it in the build up to the game.

Best of luck to Brendan and Derry in the Ulster Championship, and I’m sure that won’t be the last we see of Monaghan in this year’s All Ireland Championship.

5 Things to consider when purchasing Video Analysis Software

May 19

1. Support. I know most people would probably put price at number one but it really isn’t the most important thing. I don’t know how many times we have replaced another piece of software (you know who you are) that people bought because it was cheap. It is so important that whomever you buy software off over a great level of training and support. It is no use spending money on something that you either won’t get any training on or if you forget how to do something that you can’t pick up the phone and speak to somebody.

2. Ease of Use. You don’t need to be a techie to know how to use video analysis put it is important that the software is designed to help you as much as possible. It is no use having the best software in the world if nobody can find what they are looking for. Don’t be afraid to ask the supplier how hard it is to use, and don’t just take their word for it get examples of the types of people that are using it day in day out. I know Dartfish would not have survived as long as it has without being easy-to-use. Most people using Dartfish are not techie’s and some are using a computer for the first time. (Again you know who you are!!)

3. Price. Ahhh Finally I hear you say. I am well aware price is important I just don’t think it is the most important. Remember if you buy cheap you will buy twice (and if you buy expensive your boss will never forgive you). The important thing to consider when finding out about the price is get the balance right. You want to make sure you get everything you need without overpaying. Everyone should ask 3 questions along with the price.

                 1. Does the price include training or is that extra?

                 2. Do I need any other equipment to make video analysis work (camera, laptop etc..?)

                3. Do I have to pay an annual charge or not?

4. Different Versions. I know for most people once you start putting version numbers after products people can get lost. Most people will get lost deciding between version 4.5.3 and 6.7. Don’t worry about it too much, just make sure you are getting the right version. If you heard that team X have a certain version make sure that’s the one you are enquiring about. For all you match analysts out there Dartfish only has 2 versions you need to concern yourself with and in most cases only 1 will be applicable.

5. Potential to Develop. A lot of people will ring me up and say I want the software just for 1 or 2 simple things. It’s like buying a car, when you are 17 and getting your first car you are delighted if it goes forward and hell if it has windows, never mind electric windows, you’re delighted. However the more you drive the more you realise you would like some ‘extras’ “Wouldn’t it be great if the car had Air Con or a CD player or a sunroof. Video analysis is a bit the same, what you think you need at the start will not be what you need in a few months. So make sure to enquire about how far you might take it. What could you use video analysis for in the future? If the software is good enough it should meet your requirements for years to come.

Irish News Monday Stats Box

May 18

Just wanted to draw your attention to the Stats work done by the Irish News on a Monday. Each week they take a featured game and analyse it. They produce some really good stats from the game and it gives you a great idea of where the game was one or lost.

Monday's Stat Box - Fermanagh V Down

This is a picture from the latest game Fermanagh v Down. The Score origin is a good stat to look at. Basically do teams tend to score from Kickouts won or dispossessing the opposition. I know Kerry and Tyrone have very different approaches on this one.

Unfortunatley they charge for the content but you can check out the article at http://www.irishnews.com/appnews/597/5776/2009/5/18/617809_381687959482McGrathfe.html

Bohs Do The Double

Nov 24

It is great that my first post is about some success for a Dartfisher. Bohemians used Dartfish throughout the season analysing their own performance and the opposition. Obviously they didn’t win the league just because of Dartfish but I am sure it certainly helped. Congratulations to Pat Fenlon and all at Bohs, I’m sure they will need to get even more out of Dartfish next year in Europe.
